Boardom

OVERVIEW

Planning game nights can be a hassle; coordinating, choosing games, and keeping things fresh often takes the fun out of it. To make things easier, I designed a game night planning platform that helps players organize meetups and discover new games, making game nights smoother and more enjoyable.

CURRENT CHALLENGES

Board games are meant to be fun and social, but players often run into challenges that make game nights more frustrating than they should be. Research uncovered four key issues that affect how people find new games, plan game nights, and play with others.

01

Rather play with pre-existing friends than meet new people

02

Want to discover new games but have difficulty finding recommendations

03

Appreciate features that simplify gameplay and reduce hassles

04

Concerned about the condition of games when buying, renting, or trading

MY SOLUTION

To solve these challenges, I designed a game night planning and game exchange platform that streamlines event coordination while making it easy to buy, rent, or sell board games:

Service blueprints: creating a game night and purchasing a game.

ITERATION 01

Too Much, Too Little, or Just Confusing?

While the goal was to simplify game night planning, a few challenges were making the experience more complicated than it needed to be:

Unclear main focus: feels split between event planning and the marketplace.

Asking for too much at once, needs better pacing to keep things smooth.

Users aren’t sure what to input, especially for polls.

Instructions should be clearer to guide users through the process.

ITERATION 02

Guiding Players,
Not Guessing Games

Based on the feedback, I reiterated and conducted more user interviews. I found the need for a clearer user flow and copy specifically tailored to guide players through board game night planning.

Signup modal appeared late in the flow, risking data loss if users exited before completing event creation.

Lacked a visual example to illustrate the design and demonstrate user interactions.

Hesitated to add information and images, worried it might feel cluttered and overwhelming.

BRANDING

I shaped my branding direction by focusing on the playful, geeky, and modern nature of board games, ensuring the product feels fun and engaging rather than old-fashioned or traditional.
